Workshop 2006
- A PRACTICAL INTRODUCTION TO BYZANTINE BINDING
(Tutor: John Mumford)
Date: 27-31 August 2006 The workshop was taught by John Mumford, Head of Book Conservation at the British Library.
Model based on the 15th century Byzantine binding of Greek manuscript Royal 1.A.xv (Bible, St. Nilos commentaries) from the British Library.
- A FLEXIBLE CONSERVATION BINDING BASED ON MEDIEVAL TECHNIQUES
(Tutor: Flavio Marzo)
Date: 16-19 August 2006 This model binding is based on early Italian binding techniques, adopted as a conservation binding which protects and respects the features of the original binding on which it is applied. It is a very useful technique for the repair and conservation of damaged bindings, the features of which is important to maintain unaltered from modern intervention, which however require treatment.
This type of binding has been applied on a 12th century Benedictine manuscript and a 10th century Anglo-Saxon manuscript from the British Library. The library at the monastery of Patmos includes a good number of printed books with Italian style bindings which would benefit greatly from such an approach of conservation and this workshop was a benefit, not only for the students, but for the library too for suggesting this treatment option.
